Highlights

1. The landing and exploring of Cape Horn.  This is not something that happens often due to the weather so we were extremely lucky to land.  The Ponant Expedition crew was very meticulous with this landing. Experiencing the remoteness of this place and knowing the significance of Cape Horn within the maritime industry was very moving.

2. The Staff & Crew of Le Lyrial.  They were an absolute highlight for us, we loved the French flair!  So accommodating, attentive without being intrusive, and professional. When disembarking this cruise it was like saying goodbye to family, something that I have not felt on any other cruise!

3. Visit Tortel.  This is a captivating Chilean commune.  Although coastal it is a lumber town with intricate walkways connecting houses and local facilities and shops.  The hike and the views during the hike were beautiful.

4. Pie XI Glacier.  The sheer length of this glacier was impressive. Sailing towards the face of this Glacier was breathtaking.

5. Garibaldi Glacier Excursion. While out on the last zodiac we were surprised with a beautiful glass of champagne and a delicious French cake.  This was a very special moment. An excellent touch by Ponant. This glacier sits among steep mountains with thick green vegetation. Hearing the crack and pop of the air bubbles in the bergy bits floating in the water as we drove around in the zodiacs.

6. Discovering the various flora & fauna.  With each landing and hike we were able to discover some of the unique and beautiful plants and fungi.  So unique to each region.

7. Expedition team lectures.  The Expedition staff were extremely knowledgeable and passionate, their lectures were captivating and engaging. The passion when they too had discovered something new from the day’s activities was infectious.

8. Observatory Lounge.  This was a wonderful feature on this ship, having the chance to catch up with fellow travellers and discuss the day’s events all while sharing a beautiful cocktail and admiring the view from the decks.

Top Tips

1. Keep your camera/phone charged and handy.  There is an abundance of wildlife and scenery that you will want to capture!

2. Take layers of clothing. Ponant will give you an amazing jacket & supply you with wet-weather boots. It is great to have layers if hiking you can then take off a few things if you get too warm.

3. Embrace culture & diversity.  Ponant is known for its French heritage.  This was one of the highlights for us, get to know your fellow expedition travellers.  You will make lifelong friends.

4. Visit the Bridge.  Le Lyrial – Captained by the amazing Etienne Garcia had an open bridge policy.  Take the opportunity to visit and speak with the talented team of officers.

5. Spoil yourself with a spa treatment.  After a fun day exploring in the zodiacs take a little YOU time and have a relaxing spa treatment!

6. Extend your stay.  Ushuaia is a beautiful interesting town.  I would recommend staying for a couple of extra nights pre or post-cruise to explore.

7. Book your cruise early!  Ponant has fabulous early booking specials and with cruising being a popular way of travel, especially expedition cruising, I suggest you book early to avoid disappointment.

8. Join in on all the excursions. Even if you feel it may to too adventurous for you, give it a go.  You have extremely experienced Expedition leaders there to support and guide you along the way – you will not regret it!

9. Take a pair of binoculars.  There is so much to see and having binoculars to view a little closer can make all the difference.
